RALEIGH –  The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are featured in NCDOT Now, the department’s weekly newscast.

Kids Riding the Rail
Taking a quick and easy family trip is going to be more affordable when traveling by train.

The N.C. Department of Transportation is offering a summer special for families taking NC By Train between Raleigh and Charlotte.

A discount code is available from now through August to purchase $5 dollar tickets for up to two children between the ages of 2 and 12 with the purchase of a regular adult ticket.

“Kids ride for $5 dollars and are able to see great sights along the route, as well as ride and experience the train,” Rail Director Paul Worley said.

Book your trip now by visiting www.NCByTrain.org and enter the discount code V626 to utilize the special fare. The offer is valid for travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Secure Your Cargo
Every one of us can help reduce litter and increase driving safety by using tarps, cargo nets and tie-downs to secure items and loads in truck beds.

Debris that is tossed or falls from a vehicle becomes a safety hazard that can cause injury and property damage.

Littering is a violation of state law that the N.C. Department of Transportation and State Highway Patrol take seriously.

Here are some ways you can ensure your loads are secure:
• Tarp it. As a bonus to securing loads, truck bed covers improve fuel economy and keep cargo dry, clean and safe.
• Tie it. Bumps, turns and sudden stops can dislodge improperly secured loads. Cargo needs more than its own weight to stay in place.
• Trash it. Toolboxes and other built-in containers can be used to hold trash until it can be placed in a proper receptacle.
