Shared by Foothills RPO–Lane Closure Starting on Green River Bridges

Drivers urged to merge early, obey posted signs

HENDERSONVILLE – A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation will start a continuous lane closure Sunday night on Interstate 26 over the Green River Bridges.

Crews from Flatiron Construction will begin by closing one westbound lane near mile marker 56 in Henderson County for three nights before closing one eastbound lane starting Wednesday morning near mile marker 54.

All lanes should be open by 7 a.m. Thursday. These closures are necessary for crews to pave shoulders approaching the bridges, which allows for a future traffic shift.

This activity is part of $26.9 million contract to improve grading on the approaches, replace the existing decks and widen both bridges at this location to accommodate three lanes in the future. The contract calls for completion by Dec. 12, 2024.

A 90-second animated video rendering of the construction sequence is available online. The process includes building new lanes between the two bridges, removing old concrete and building a new deck in one direction, then repeating the process in the other direction.

Drivers are urged to merge early, remain alert and obey all posted signs in the construction area.
